This is an extract of one of our volunteers (Maria) who went to Nepal. This text (originally in Dutch) comes from Maria’s journal:
“Fik and I are starting the trip to the project. Nakul and Ram are accompanying us and drive us with a motorbike from Jorpati to Kolati to walk from there the end to Khaharekhola.
We get ourselves to Dolalghat without too much trouble. Once we have passed there it will be more difficult: loose stones and I do not dare to look next to me, where the abyss is. Sometimes Fik and I have to walk because it is impossible to drive. From Kolati the path becomes really narrow and it is nearly impossible to get out there. During this walk I think about the mountain people who are living so isolated and who have to walk so many kilometers if they need something.
After 85 km – for which we needed 6 hours – we arrive in the village where Nakul’s parents live. Some of the villagers bring us chairs and make it as comfortable as possible for us. Even their bedrooms are changed for a carpet on the floor, between the pumpkins and beans.
We are served the traditional bhat (rice with lentil soup). During our visit, there are made many offers (chickens, goats). What great hospitality! And this for people who hardly have anything…”
