Explore the history of Rome, go shopping in fashionable Milan, take the gondola in Venice or simply relax at one of the many Italian beaches. This can all become reality when you choose to become an au pair in Italy with Au Pair New Zealand.

Application and requirements

To Italy with Au Pair New ZealandIn order to become an au pair in Italy, you need to be at least 18 years old and able to stay for minimum 3 months. Although you can stay in Italy for 12 months, you can only work for a total of 6 months in the 12 months period and only 3 months with the same employer. The best time to be placed in Italy is during the summer June until September, or from September until June.

Au Pair New Zealand will help you with your application process, host family search and support during your stay in Italy. The documents we need to start this process are an application form, a passport photo2 childcare references, a police check, a medical check, a photo collage or video and copies of your passport, first aid course if applicable and driving licence. All information provided must be truthful. 

Tasks

The work varies and depends on the type of family and their lifestyle. In general, daily tasks include carrying out light housework such as helping to keep the home clean and tidy, doing laundry, ironing clothes, making breakfast and simple meals, looking after the children and supervising them, accompanying the children to kindergarten, school or specific activities, taking them for walks, playing with them, watching over the house or apartment and looking after pets.

Work and free time

You will only work 20 to 25 hours per week as children from 1 year onwards go to the nursery during the day.

Holidays

You have 2 paid days of holiday for each month worked. So if you come for 3 months, you will have 6 days of paid holiday, 12 days for 6 months and if you stay for a year you have 24 days.

Language course

Although the language course is not paid for by the host family, it is really cheap. If you come for a longer period you can participate in a course at a public school that is organized twice a week for 1.5 hours. The cost for 9 months is 30€ (ca. 50 NZD) for example.

Accommodation and meals

You will have your own private room and all meals at no cost.

The minimum families have to pay is 50 € (ca. 80 NZD) per week. Often this amount is between 60 € (ca. 100 NZD) and 80 € (ca. 130 NZD) per week though. You are responsible for your own ticket to Italy as well as your health and travel insurance for the duration of your stay.

Visa

Each year, 250 visas are offered to New Zealand citizens who are between 18 and 30 years old. You will be able to work for a total of 6 months during the period of 1 year, but only 3 months with the same employer. Upon arrival in Italy, when you present the visa to the Police (“Questura”), the relevant Italian authorities will issue a residence permit for you. The visa application form, which you can find on the website of the Italian Embassy in Wellington has to be filled out in the presence of an Italian Consular Agent or Justice of Peace and then couriered to the Embassy. Fees

The cost to participate in the Au Pair Italy programme is 350 NZD and covers the preparation of your stay. This also includes an interview, assistance to find you a host family and local support when you have arrived for the duration of your stay.
